Chinese Antique, Republic Period Canton Porcelain Charger, Fox and Owl Motif, 34.5 cm #3088
Very nice and large charger with a decoration of the story of the Owl and the Fox.
Early Republic period.
The scene draws its inspiration from Aesop’s fable The Fox and the Owl. The fox depicted here is shown with two tails, a creative adaptation inspired by China’s mythical nine-tailed fox, blending Western fable and Chinese folklore in one painting. The upside-down bird in the composition is another charming and whimsical detail. The plate features mythical beast, owl, birds, butterflies, pine trees and blossoms with rich, vibrant colours.The rim is richly decorated with longevity symbols, ancient coin medallions and fruit-and-vegetable cartouches. A high-quality export Canton porcelain masterpiece from the early Republican period. Most surviving examples of this motif are crudely painted by comparison, while this piece boasts exquisite detailing, fluid brushwork and superior colour rendering.
Reference from the National Museum in China (see last picture)
The National Museum of China holds a comparable Canton porcelain piece as a representative example of Canton ware. Our charger exhibits finer and more refined painting quality than that museum reference.
Condition:
Checked with UV light. 3 restored nicks to the rim on the front side, one glaze line to the backside. (not going through to the front side). General wear and manufacturing flaws.
