Chinese Antique silk embroidery, Jifu / Dragon robe fragment, 19th century Qing Dynasty #2565
Textile fragment from an antique Chinese Qing Dynasty Jifu / Dragon Robe. The textile was cut just above the waist of the robe. Originally the robe would have had 9 dragons but after modification 5 dragons remains on this textile. Jifu with 9 dragons was only allowed to be worn by mandarins of the 1-3rd rank.
All dragons are set amidst bright lingzhi-clouds and interspersed with 'precious objects', bats and cranes with lishui stripes at the shoulders separated by further clouds and wave formations.

PROVENANCE
Private collection acquired by shipbroker in Shanghai from the late 19th century until World War II
Since then in the family.
